Chores the kids actually get pinged about

Every Thursday the recycling missed the curb. The Okonkwos put the weekly chores on a shared checklist and added a reminder to each chore. The kids' phones buzz on chore night, and once a chore is checked off, its reminder stays quiet.

What you'll end up with

  1. Make a Checklist

Reminders work on Checklist lists, so use that type for chores, not Grocery.

    1. In Portico Lists, tap + (New list).
    2. Name it Chores, set Type to Checklist, and tap Create.
    3. Add the chores: Take out recycling, Feed Biscuit, Unload dishwasher, Vacuum stairs.

New to Portico? The grocery list journey covers installing the app and getting an agent.

  2. Make it reset every week

Chores come back every week, so check them in place instead of letting them disappear.

    1. In the list, open Settings.
    2. Under When marking items, choose Mark in place.
    3. On Sunday, use Mark all undone to start a fresh week.

  3. Put a reminder on a chore

The bell on a chore sets a reminder for just that chore.

    1. Tap the bell on Take out recycling (Add reminder).
    2. Set When to this Thursday at 6:30 PM.
    3. Set Repeat to Every week.
    4. Set Notify to Everyone on this list.
    5. In Note (optional), write Bins go to the curb tonight, then tap Add.

Why it stays quiet: while a chore is checked off, its repeating reminder is paused. Once the recycling is done, nobody gets pinged again. Mark all undone on Sunday turns the reminders back on.

  4. Add a weekly check-in

A list reminder is about the whole checklist, not one chore.

    1. In the list's Settings, go to Reminders and tap Add list reminder.
    2. When: Saturday at 5:00 PM. Repeat: Every week. Notify: Everyone on this list.
    3. Note: Chore check-in before dinner. Tap Add.

See them all: List all reminders shows every reminder on the list in one place, with Edit and × on each.

  5. Invite the kids

Only people on the list get Everyone on this list reminders.

    1. Tap the Users pill, then + (Invite someone).
    2. Give the invite a name, and leave Access rights at User.
    3. Tap QR and have them scan it with their Camera, then tap Accept in Portico Mobile.
    4. On their phone, turn on Allow notifications in Lists Settings → Notifications.

  6. Thursday, 6:30 PM

Here's what lands on everyone's phone.

    1. The notification title is the list name, Chores. The text reads Take out recycling — Bins go to the curb tonight.
    2. Tapping it opens the list. Whoever takes the bins out checks the chore off.
    3. Each reminder fires at the same local time every week, even after daylight saving changes.
